Local Dentist Earns FACD Smile Gallery Gold Medals

Tallahassee, Florida: The Florida Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (FACD) proudly presented Rita Medwid, DDS of Stuart with a Gold Medal for her 2008 Smile Gallery entry at the FACD 2008 Annual Scientific Session & Trade Show, held September 25 – 27, 2008 at Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club Resorts in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Dr. Medwid worked with dental technician Ric Herbert, CDT (Certified Dental Technician) of Dynamic Ceramics in Apopka on the winning case.

FACD’s Smile Gallery Competition was started in 2006 as a chance for Florida cosmetic dentists, and the dental laboratory technicians they work with, to showcase their best cases in front of their peers, and is presented annually at the FACD Annual Scientific Session & Trade Show. For each case, the doctor submits 6 photos – before and after shots of the patient’s headshot, retracted view of the mouth and the patient’s smile, along with a brief explanation of the case treatment.

The FACD Smile Gallery Gold Medal winners are anonymously selected by a panel of judges made up of the three newest FACD board members. For 2008, the panel selected 36 of 70 submitted cases as Gold Medal winning cases.

“FACD takes great pride in the talents of our members, and wish to extend congratulations to Dr. Medwid for winning a Gold Medal at the 2008 FACD Smile Gallery Competition,” said FACD Executive Director Adrienne Tooley, CMP, CAE. “This competition is designed to be a showcase of Florida’s best in clinical cosmetic dentistry, and Dr. Medwid is an outstanding example of this. It takes a tremendous amount of time, talent and energy to create a case that is worthy of being judged by a dentist or dental technician’s toughest critics – his or her cosmetic dentistry colleagues. ”

The Florida Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry is dedicated to advancing the science and art of cosmetic dentistry for its members and their patients in the state of Florida. FACD was formed in 1998 as an organization devoted to seeking improvements in the science and art of cosmetic dentistry.

Case Write-up:

Patient presents with a chief complaint that she was unhappy with her front teeth. She did not like the diastema, the dark color and the bulkiness that flared out on her lip. She had very specific requirements wanting the crowns flatter, less full, and straighter incisal edges,and to match the color of #6 and #11 rather than bleaching the teeth. She had photos of the desired teeth.Treatment consisted of removal of existing crowns # 7,8,9,&10, and placing new core buildups on existing endodontically treated teeth. The patient was placed in two different sets of provisionals to achieve her desired results.

When the patient was pleased with the esthetics, function and comfort of the new incisal edge position, and facial contour, we took photographs and alginates of the existing temps to send to the lab.

Lava crowns were made for #7,8,9,10 using Clear Match computer shade technology. The results were remarkable and the patient was extremely pleased with the results.sdfs
